Adding a bundle to a Shopify product page is the easy part. The number that decides whether it makes you money is the discount. Too shallow and no one bundles; too deep and every bundle sale is a margin donation. This is a pricing problem, not a setup problem — so treat it like one. Here’s how to price a bundle so it lifts average order value and protects contribution margin at the same time.
Start with the working range: 10–20% off
For most catalogues the useful bundle discount lives between 10% and 20%. Below ~10% the saving is too small to change behaviour — customers don’t feel it and the bundle reads as a rounding error. Above ~20% you’re usually giving away more margin than the incremental units earn back, unless you’re deliberately clearing stock or running the bundle as a loss-leading acquisition offer.
The discount only exists to shift the decision from “buy one item” to “buy the set”. Once it’s large enough to do that, extra depth mostly transfers your margin to people who would have bundled anyway. Find the smallest discount that flips the decision, not the biggest one you can stomach.
Discount the whole set, or just the extras?
How you scope the offer changes what the discount touches — and Profit Flow AOV Bundle handles both:
- Specific-product bundle (base + extras). You define a hero product plus named add-ons. Here the discount can apply to the entire set, headlined as “save X% on the bundle.” This is the classic single-vs-bundle selector on a product page: buy the item alone, or take the bundle and save.
- All-products / collection bundle. The offer lets the customer add any qualifying items, so the base stays at full price and the discount applies only to the extras — “save X% on the extras.” Nothing eats into your hero product’s margin; you’re only sweetening the add-on.
Match the framing to the goal. Anchoring on one flagship product? Discount the whole set so the headline saving is bigger. Building an any-mix set from a collection? Discount only the extras and keep the base intact.
Anchor against buying separately
A bundle price means nothing on its own — it means something next to the à la carte total. Always show both: the sum of the items bought separately, then the bundle price and the saving. That contrast is the entire mechanism. “$120” is a number; “$120 instead of $145, save 17%” is a decision.
Perceived value comes from the gap you make visible, not the absolute discount. A tight, sensible set (the product plus the two things people actually buy with it) at 15% off will out-convert a random grab-bag at 25% off, because the shopper can see why the set belongs together.
A worked margin example (illustrative)
Numbers below are made up to show the mechanics — plug in your own.
Say an item sells for $50 at a 40% margin, so $20 contribution per unit. You build a bundle of that item plus two extras — $120 separately — and offer 15% off the set, a $102 bundle price. You’ve handed back $18 of discount.
If bundle buyers would otherwise have bought just the one $50 item ($20 margin), the bundle now carries roughly $48 of product cost logic to check: three items’ cost vs $102 revenue. The point is simple — as long as the incremental margin from the two added items exceeds the $18 you discounted, the bundle beats the single-item sale. Run the subtraction on your real costs before you publish. If the extras are high-margin, you can afford the top of the range; if they’re thin, stay near 10%.
The checkout-safe part
None of this survives contact with a real cart if the discount is cosmetic. A theme that simply strikes through a price can be broken by editing the cart or deep-linking a variant — the customer reaches checkout paying less than the bundle requires.
Profit Flow AOV Bundle enforces the price with a Shopify Discount Function: the discount is applied server-side and only when the whole set is in the cart. Remove an item and the bundle price disappears; keep the set and it holds through checkout. Your pricing strategy is only as good as its enforcement — this is the enforcement.
