Bundling related products into one offer is one of the fastest ways to raise average order value — if the pricing holds up at checkout. This guide shows how to create product bundles on Shopify two ways: the native Shopify Bundles app, and a product-page bundle widget for when you need tiered pricing, BOGO, or a free gift. We’ll also cover fixed vs mix-and-match and why checkout-safe pricing matters.
Option 1: the native Shopify Bundles app
Shopify ships a free first-party app called Shopify Bundles that creates real bundle products. Use it when you want a clean, inventory-aware bundle and don’t need extra offer mechanics.
- From your admin, go to Settings → Apps and sales channels → Shopify App Store and install Shopify Bundles (published by Shopify).
- Open the app and click Create bundle.
- Choose the products (and specific variants) that make up the bundle. For a mix-and-match bundle, add a pool of options and set how many the shopper picks.
- Set the bundle price or a percentage discount off the combined price.
- Save. Shopify creates a bundle product with its own page, and it tracks component inventory so you don’t oversell.
Where it stops: the native app builds the bundle product, but it won’t put a tiered offer widget (“buy 2 save 10%, buy 3 save 15%”) on your existing product pages, and it can’t run Buy-X-Get-Y or a gift with purchase. For those, you need an offer app.
Option 2: a product-page bundle widget (more offer types)
If you want the bundle to appear as a choice on the product page — alongside quantity breaks, BOGO, or a free gift — a dedicated offer app is the better fit. This is also the route for mix-and-match offers that discount at the cart level rather than creating a separate SKU.
- Install a bundle/offer app. Our free Profit Flow AOV Bundle does this and more, at no cost.
- Create a bundle offer and pick the products or the pool shoppers choose from.
- Set the discount — a fixed bundle price or a percentage off.
- Choose where the widget mounts on the product page (most themes work out of the box).
- Publish and test by adding the bundle to your cart and going all the way to checkout.
The advantage is merchandising: the offer is visible at the moment of intent, and you can run several offer types from one app.
Fixed vs mix-and-match: which to use
- Fixed bundle — the same products every time. Great for starter kits, “frequently bought together,” and gift sets where curation is the value.
- Mix-and-match — the shopper builds their own set from a pool (“pick any 3”). Converts better when variety is the appeal (flavors, scents, colors) and reduces choice paralysis versus browsing the whole catalog. See the full walkthrough in how to set up mix & match bundles. For sized products, let shoppers mix variants in a bundle — buy 3, pick a size each.
A common pattern is to pair a bundle with volume pricing so a bigger basket earns a bigger discount — see how to set up volume discounts. And if you want several offers live at once, read how to run multiple discounts at once.
Why checkout-safe bundle pricing matters
Here’s the trap with cheaper bundle apps. Many apply the discount in storefront JavaScript — it looks right on the product page, but the cart is a separate, dynamic object. If a shopper removes one item from the bundle, a JS-only app can leave the full bundle discount applied to a cart that no longer qualifies. That’s straight margin loss, and it erodes trust when the totals don’t reconcile.
The reliable fix is to enforce the bundle at checkout with a Shopify Function. The Function re-validates the cart server-side, so what the shopper saw is exactly what they’re charged — no matter how they edit the cart. Profit Flow AOV Bundle uses a Function for exactly this reason, and it’s why we call our offers checkout-safe.
Quick tips that make bundles convert
- Anchor the saving. Show the combined regular price struck through next to the bundle price so the value is obvious.
- Keep components relevant. A bundle only works if the items genuinely belong together.
- Test one bundle at a time. Read the impact on AOV before stacking more offers — see how to increase average order value on Shopify.
