How to increase average order value (AOV) on Shopify

Raise average order value with offers that actually hold at checkout.

Average order value (AOV) is how much, on average, a customer spends per order. It’s one of the few growth levers you can pull without buying more traffic — lift AOV and every existing visitor and ad click is worth more.

Revenue = Traffic × Conversion rate × AOV. Most stores pour money into the first two. AOV is the one you can often move this week, with offers on pages you already have.

Product-page offers lift average order value without needing more traffic — every existing visitor is worth more.

Why AOV is the highest-leverage lever

Acquiring traffic gets more expensive every year. Raising AOV compounds on top of everything you already do: the same ad spend, the same SEO, the same email list — each order is simply worth more. Even a 10–15% lift in AOV flows almost straight to the bottom line.

The proven AOV tactics (and where they fit)

  1. Quantity / bundle offers on the product page. “Buy 2, get 1 free”, 3-for-2, or tiered volume discounts (x2 / x3 / x5). These work at the moment of highest intent — the product page — and are the fastest AOV win for most stores.
  2. Buy X get Y free (BOGO). A classic that raises units per order. The catch is enforcing it correctly so an unqualified gift doesn’t stay free.
  3. Free gift with purchase over a threshold. “Free gift over $50” nudges shoppers to add one more item to qualify — set the threshold just above your current AOV.
  4. Free-shipping threshold. The most common nudge; pair it with a progress bar.
  5. Post-add upsells and complementary products. Recommend the natural next item.

The first three are exactly what Profit Flow AOV Bundle is built for — and it makes them checkout-safe (more on that below).

The trap: offers that break at checkout

Most cheap AOV apps apply discounts and gifts in storefront JavaScript. That looks fine on the product page, but if the cart changes — an item is removed, quantities edited, a currency switched — an unqualified gift can stay free, or a discount can apply when it shouldn’t. You lose margin and, worse, trust.

Checkout-safe offers are enforced by a Shopify Discount Function at checkout, so what the shopper sees equals what they’re charged — every time. This is the technical signature of everything Profit Flow ships.

How to measure it

Track AOV monthly, alongside conversion rate and units per order, so you can see whether an offer raised basket size without hurting conversion. Change one offer at a time and give it enough orders to read a real signal.

FAQ

What is a good average order value on Shopify?

It varies hugely by niche and price point, so the number that matters is your own trend over time. Track AOV monthly and aim to lift it without hurting conversion rate.

What's the fastest way to increase AOV?

Product-page quantity offers (buy 2 get 1, volume discounts) and a free-gift threshold are the fastest, because they raise basket size at the moment of intent without needing more traffic.

Do AOV apps hurt conversion rate?

Done well, no — a clear offer can lift both. The risk is fragile, JS-only offers that break at checkout and erode trust. Checkout-safe offers avoid that.
