Most Shopify stores are not held back by Google’s algorithm — they’re held back by pages Google can’t understand, can’t rank, or was never asked to index. Shopify SEO is less about tricks and more about a clean, fast, well-structured store that earns the click. Here’s the checklist we run on every store we audit.
1. Indexing and site structure
Google can only rank what it can find and wants to keep. Start here.
- Submit your sitemap (
/sitemap.xml) in Google Search Console and watch the Coverage report for errors. - Prune thin pages. Shopify auto-generates tag pages and filtered collection URLs that are
near-duplicates.
noindexthe ones with no unique value so they don’t dilute your store. - Keep a flat structure. Every important product should be reachable in two or three clicks from the homepage. Deep, orphaned products rarely rank.
- Fix crawl waste. Redirect old URLs, kill 404s, and make sure canonical tags point to the real page — not a filtered or paginated variant.
2. Titles, meta and headings
This is the cheapest ranking lever and the most neglected one.
- Unique title tags on every page, keyword near the front, brand at the end.
- Compelling meta descriptions — they don’t rank you directly, but they win the click, and click-through is a signal.
- One H1 per page, with logical H2/H3 structure. Don’t use headings for styling.
3. Collection and product pages
Collections are your money keywords (“men’s running shoes”); products are your long-tail. Both need real copy, not just a grid of items.
- Add 150–300 words of genuinely useful text to key collection pages — buying guidance, not keyword stuffing.
- Write original product descriptions. Manufacturer copy is duplicated across the web and rarely ranks.
- Use descriptive alt text on images (helps accessibility and image search).
4. Content and internal links
Product pages alone won’t win informational searches. A how-to blog captures people earlier in the journey and gives you internal links to point at collections.
- Answer the questions your buyers actually search.
- Link from each post to the relevant collection or product with descriptive anchor text.
- Refresh top posts yearly instead of letting them go stale.
5. Structured data
Structured data (schema markup) is how you earn rich results — star ratings, prices, FAQs —
that make your listing bigger and more clickable. At minimum, add Product, BreadcrumbList
and FAQPage schema. Many themes include some of it; verify with Google’s Rich Results Test.
6. Core Web Vitals and speed
Speed is both a ranking factor and a conversion factor, and mobile is where most of your traffic and most of your losses live. Trim heavy apps, serve modern-format images, choose a lean theme and cut render-blocking scripts. We cover the specifics in how to speed up your Shopify store — work through it after the checklist above.
Do it in order
Fix indexing first (so Google sees the right pages), then on-page (titles, copy, schema), then speed, then content. Chasing content while thin pages leak crawl budget is how stores spin their wheels for months.
