The honest answer to Shopify development cost is “it depends” — but that’s useless without the ranges behind it. Below is what real Shopify projects actually cost in 2026, broken down by project type, so you can sanity-check a quote before you sign it. We build Shopify stores, apps and Functions for a living, so these are the numbers we quote and see quoted.
The three ways you get billed
Before the ranges, understand the pricing models — because the same project can be sold three ways:
- Hourly — you pay for time. Freelancers commonly charge $40–$120/hour; specialist agencies $100–$250/hour. Best for open-ended or iterative work.
- Fixed price — you buy a defined outcome for a set number. Best when scope is clear. The risk of overrun sits with the developer, so a vague brief gets padded.
- Retainer — a monthly block (often $1,000–$8,000/month) for ongoing changes, support and optimization. Best once your store is live and always evolving.
None is “cheaper” in the abstract. The right one depends on how well-defined your scope is.
Theme customization: $150–$5,000
The most common request, and the widest range. Small tweaks — moving a section, restyling a button, adding a badge — are a few hundred dollars. A bigger job — a bespoke product page, custom sections, a redesigned cart drawer — runs into the low thousands. What drives the cost is how far you go beyond the theme’s existing settings: editing Liquid, adding metafields and custom JavaScript costs more than toggling what the theme already supports. This is our theme customization territory, and most of it is genuinely affordable.
Custom app or Shopify Function: $3,000–$25,000
When you need behavior Shopify doesn’t offer out of the box — a custom discount that survives checkout, a bespoke shipping rule, a private integration — you need a custom app or a Shopify Function. This is the single most mispriced category, because it looks like “just an app” but is really software: it has to be built, tested for correctness, and kept working as Shopify evolves. Checkout-safe logic is the expensive part — a discount that renders in the theme is easy; one enforced by a Function at checkout so it can’t be gamed is real engineering. Simple Functions start around $3k; a full custom app with an admin UI and ongoing logic is $10k–$25k+. See custom apps and Functions for what actually goes into one.
Full custom store build: $15,000–$100,000+
A ground-up build — custom design, custom theme, integrations, content migration, the works — is where the big numbers live. A lean but genuinely custom store on Shopify starts around $15k–$30k. A complex build on Shopify Plus with ERP/CRM integrations, multiple markets and custom checkout logic runs $50k–$100k+. The cost drivers here are design complexity, the number of integrations, and how much custom app work rides along. Our Shopify development service covers this end to end.
Store migration: $2,000–$30,000
Migrating from WooCommerce, Magento or BigCommerce is priced mostly by data volume and redirect complexity, not design. A small catalog with a clean redirect map is a few thousand dollars; a large store with tens of thousands of SKUs, historical orders, and a sprawling old URL structure is far more — because getting the 301 redirects and SEO parity right is what protects your traffic through the switch. Skimp here and you pay for it in lost rankings.
Ongoing support: $500–$8,000/month
A live store is never “done.” Most serious merchants keep a retainer for bug fixes, new features, speed work and seasonal campaigns. Small stores might spend a few hundred a month; high-volume Plus stores keep a dedicated block. The value is having someone who already knows your codebase when something breaks at 2am on Black Friday. For what a retainer actually covers, see our breakdown of ongoing maintenance and support costs.
What actually drives your number
Two stores can get quotes 10x apart for the “same” project. The real drivers are:
- Checkout and Plus requirements — anything touching checkout is the most expensive Shopify work there is.
- Custom app / Function work — real software, priced like software.
- Data migration volume — SKUs, orders, customers, redirects.
- Integrations — every ERP, CRM or 3PL connection adds scope.
- Design complexity — bespoke design costs more than a customized premium theme.
How to spend it wisely
Get itemized quotes, not a single lump sum — you want to see what each piece costs so you can cut or defer the low-value ones. Be wary of the cheapest bid on anything checkout-related; that’s where cut corners cost you real revenue later. And define your scope before you ask for a fixed price — a clear brief gets you a fair number instead of a padded one.
