The headline Shopify Plus cost is roughly $2,300/month — but that number on its own tells you almost nothing about whether it’s worth it. What matters is what you get for it, what it actually costs once you include the parts nobody quotes upfront, and whether your store has the volume and complexity to turn that spend into return. We build on Plus, so here’s the honest version, not the sales pitch.
What Shopify Plus actually costs
Plus uses two pricing models:
- Flat fee: most merchants pay a base of approximately $2,300/month on a standard contract (typically committed annually). That’s about $27,600/year before anything else.
- Revenue-based: past a high sales threshold, Shopify switches you to a percentage of revenue — usually a fraction of a percent, capped — which can climb to $40,000/month or more for very large merchants.
But the platform fee is the start of the budget, not the whole of it. A realistic total cost of ownership includes:
- Payment processing — you still pay per-transaction fees (lower on Plus, but not zero).
- Apps — enterprise apps for reviews, subscriptions, search, ERP connectors, and more.
- Development — the big one, and the most forgotten. Plus unlocks checkout customization, Functions, and B2B; it doesn’t build them for you.
That last point is where most Plus budgets go wrong, so it’s worth its own section.
The cost everyone forgets: development
Here’s the uncomfortable truth: Plus is a capability licence, not a finished store. The features that justify the price — a customized checkout, checkout-safe discount logic, a working B2B portal, multi-store setups — are things you have to build. Checkout UI extensions and Shopify Functions are real software: they have to be engineered, tested for correctness, and maintained as Shopify evolves. That’s our custom apps and Functions territory, and it’s a genuine line item.
Merchants who budget only the $2,300/month and expect the value to appear are the ones who end up disappointed. The ones who see real ROI budget for the platform and the engineering to exploit it. If you can’t fund both, you’re not ready for Plus — and that’s a perfectly fine thing to conclude.
What you actually get for the money
For the fee, Plus buys capability that’s simply unavailable below it:
- Checkout extensibility — customize checkout with apps and Functions; run server-side discount, shipping, and payment logic that can’t be gamed.
- The B2B suite — native wholesale on the same store: company accounts, price lists, payment terms. If you sell B2B and DTC together, this can pay for Plus by itself — see Shopify B2B & wholesale.
- Up to 10 expansion stores for regions, brands, or currencies, managed centrally.
- Higher API limits + Shopify Flow — roughly double the API throughput for heavy integrations, plus the automation engine.
- A launch engineer and priority support.
None of that matters if you don’t need it. All of it matters enormously if you do.
The honest ROI test
Do the maths against your revenue, not against the sticker price. At $1M/year, the ~$27,600 platform fee is about 2.8% of revenue — affordable if you need what Plus provides, wasteful if you don’t. At $3M/year it’s under 1%, and the calculus tilts clearly toward “worth it” the moment you have a real structural need. At $400k/year, that same fee is nearly 7% of revenue — almost never justified.
So run two checks:
- Volume. Is your revenue high enough that ~$27,600+ is a small percentage? Roughly $1M+/year is where it starts making sense on cost alone.
- Need. Do you have a Plus-shaped problem — checkout you can’t customize, B2B you can’t run natively, markets you can’t separate, API limits you keep hitting?
You need both. High volume with no structural need means you’re paying for headroom you won’t use. A real need at low volume means the fee outweighs the benefit — solve it with development on standard Shopify instead.
When Plus is not worth it
We’ll say it plainly because it’s usually the right advice: most merchants asking this question don’t need Plus yet. If your goal is a better-converting product page, quantity breaks, an upsell, or a smarter cart, all of that is achievable on standard Shopify for a fraction of the cost. Upgrading to Plus to solve a conversion problem is spending enterprise money on a development problem. The upgrade is worth it when your constraints are structural and permanent — not cosmetic and fixable.
The bottom line
The real Shopify Plus cost is ~$2,300/month plus processing, apps, and — critically — the development to actually use it. It’s worth it when you have both the volume to absorb the fee and a genuine structural need it solves. It’s not worth it when you’re chasing polish you could buy far cheaper. The number isn’t the decision; the fit is.
