How to set up a post-purchase upsell on Shopify

July 4, 2026

Post-purchase upsell on Shopify — what it is, the native post-purchase page vs apps, and how one-click upsells fit alongside product-page AOV offers.

A post-purchase upsell on Shopify is an offer shown in the moment after payment but before the thank-you page — accepted in one click, with no re-entered card details, added straight to the same order. It’s one of the safest AOV levers you have, because it can’t disrupt the sale that already happened. This guide explains how it works and how to set one up.

What a post-purchase upsell actually is

After a shopper completes checkout, Shopify can show one more offer on a dedicated post-purchase page before the order confirmation. Because payment is already captured, the customer accepts with a single click and the item is appended to the existing order — no second checkout, no new shipping form. That low friction is why acceptance rates can be strong even on a simple offer.

The key distinction from a product-page offer: a post-purchase upsell happens after the buying decision, so it carries zero risk to your conversion rate. The trade-off is that it only fires once the sale is locked in, so it can’t grow the basket during the main decision.

Option 1: the native post-purchase page + an app

Shopify provides the post-purchase checkout extension point, but you configure the offer through an app that supports it. There isn’t a code-free native offer builder — the platform supplies the page, the app supplies the logic.

  1. In your admin, choose an app that supports post-purchase checkout extensions.
  2. Go to Settings → Checkout and, under Post-purchase page, select that app as the active post-purchase extension.
  3. In the app, create an offer: pick the product to upsell, the discount (if any), and the triggering conditions (which orders see it).
  4. Set the copy and imagery for the one-click offer.
  5. Place a real test order and confirm the offer appears after payment and appends correctly.

Option 2: pair it with product-page AOV offers

Post-purchase is powerful, but it’s the last touchpoint — you also want to grow the basket during the decision, on the product page. That’s where quantity breaks, bundles, BOGO and a free gift do their work. The two stages complement each other:

Our free Profit Flow AOV Bundle handles the product-page side — the offers that shape the basket before checkout — with everything enforced by a Shopify Function so the price the shopper sees is exactly what they’re charged. Run a post-purchase app for the after-payment stage and you’ve covered both moments. For how these tactics relate, see cross-sell vs upsell on Shopify.

What to offer post-purchase

Why checkout-safety still matters

Post-purchase offers append to a paid order, so the classic JavaScript failure mode is less of an issue there. But your product-page offers — the ones doing most of the AOV work — are exactly where fragile, JS-only discounts can leak margin: a free gift or bundle discount that stays applied after the cart is edited. Enforcing those with a Shopify Function keeps them checkout-safe, so what the shopper sees is what they’re charged. Get the product-page offers right first; layer post-purchase on top.

Measure the combined lift

Track average order value and upsell acceptance rate separately for the product-page and post-purchase stages so you know which is doing the work. Change one offer at a time — see how to increase average order value on Shopify for the full set of levers.

FAQ

What is a post-purchase upsell on Shopify?
It's an offer shown after the customer pays but before the order confirmation page. They can accept it in one click without re-entering payment details, so it adds to the same order. It's a low-friction way to lift average order value without risking the original conversion.
Do post-purchase upsells hurt conversion?
No — because they appear after checkout, they can't disrupt the original purchase. The worst case is the shopper declines. That's what makes post-purchase upsells lower-risk than pop-ups earlier in the funnel.
Do I need an app for post-purchase upsells?
Yes. Shopify exposes a post-purchase checkout extension point, but you configure the actual offer through an app that supports it. The native platform provides the page; the app provides the offer logic and one-click acceptance.
