You’ve built the BOGO. The discount works, the widget is live. Now the actual job: getting shoppers in front of it and converting them. A buy-one-get-one offer only prints money if people see it at the moment they’re deciding — and if the deal survives contact with a cart a shopper edits. This is a promotion playbook, not a setup guide. If you still need to wire the mechanics, start with how to set up BOGO on Shopify.
Merchandise it on the product page first
The cheapest traffic you have is already on your site. Before you spend a cent on ads, put the offer where the decision happens: a product-page widget that spells out “buy one, get one free” with the reward auto-added, plus a badge on collection tiles and the PDP so the deal reads at a glance. The Profit Flow AOV Bundle renders this natively — see the mechanic in buy X get Y free. This is the highest-ROI channel because it converts intent you’ve already paid for.
Announcement bar and a dedicated landing page
Add a site-wide announcement bar with the headline and the end date — the deadline is what turns “nice” into “now.” Then build a collection or landing page for the BOGO range so every other channel has one clean URL to point at. Don’t scatter traffic across ten product pages; concentrate it where the offer is unmistakable and the eligible products are grouped.
Email and SMS
Your list is warm and free to reach. Send a launch email the morning the sale opens, a mid-sale reminder, and a last-call the day it ends — subject lines that lead with the reward (“Your second one’s free”) beat clever ones. SMS does the heavy lifting on the final day: one short message with the deadline and the landing-page link. Segment out recent buyers of the BOGO products so you’re not discounting a sale you’d have made anyway.
The ads angle
BOGO is an easy creative brief because the value is instant and visual. Lead the ad with the free item, not the percentage — “get a second free” outperforms “50% off two” even though the math is identical. Point paid social and search straight at the landing page, and retarget cart abandoners with the deadline. Keep one message per channel so you can read the results cleanly later.
Urgency and the end date
Every asset — bar, email, SMS, ad, PDP — should carry the same end date. A real deadline is the single biggest lever on a promotion; a BOGO with no end is just a permanent price cut that trains shoppers to wait. Set it, show it everywhere, and honor it.
A note on why campaign traffic can’t game it
Promotion drives a lot of cart edits — people click an ad, add the free item, swap sizes, remove the qualifying product. With a JavaScript-only offer that’s where the margin leaks: the free item can stay in the cart at zero cost after the qualifying item is gone. Profit Flow AOV Bundle enforces the deal with a Shopify Discount Function at checkout. The Function re-validates the cart server-side, so the reward is granted only when the qualifying items are actually present — no matter how your campaign traffic edits the cart on the way to pay. What the shopper sees is what they’re charged.
Measure the added revenue
Pick a baseline window before the sale and compare units per order, AOV and redemption rate across it. Gross sales alone will lie to you — a BOGO can lift revenue while thinning blended margin, so model the margin on the discounted line too. Change one variable per run and, when you want to know which offer wins, run a clean test: how to A/B test Shopify offers.
